More Masks Than Jellyfish
More Masks Than Jellyfish was installed at Stige Ø in Odense, Denmark, in the summer of 2022 as part of the Harbour Art Walk exhibition, which opened on 3 July with multiple site-specific projects.
The work is inspired by research suggesting that, due to the widespread use of disposable Covid-19 masks, the oceans may soon contain more face masks than jellyfish. The installation translates this projection into a physical presence within the landscape, confronting visitors with the scale and material reality of single-use waste.
Through this project, I aim to question our relationship with disposable plastic, bulk consumption and reactive overproduction. Most of the masks were donated by a local institution in Odense that had purchased them in large quantities and was left with 150,000 unused masks after restrictions were lifted in Denmark. What was once considered necessary protection became surplus waste almost overnight.
